What each one means in practice
Auto rental damage
Primary cover, which is rare. It pays before your own motor insurance rather than after, so you can decline the rental counter’s damage waiver without involving your insurer at all.
The entire cost has to go on this card. A partial payment does not qualify.
Trip cancellation
The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $20,000 rather than $10,000. Four people at $10,000 each would come to $40,000, but the guide caps any one trip at $20,000.
Across a year this card pays at most $40,000 for this benefit, however many trips.
Trips longer than 60 days are outside the cover entirely.
Lost or damaged baggage
The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $12,000 rather than $3,000.
Sub-limits apply: $500 for jewelry and watches and $500 for cameras and electronics. Those come out of the total rather than sitting on top of it.
Emergency medical
The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $10,000 rather than $2,500.
There is a $50 deductible.
Trip delay
Six hours is an unusually low threshold. Most cards start at twelve, including cards from the same issuer, so this one reaches delays the others miss.
An overnight stay counts even when the delay is shorter than that.
Air traffic control delays are not on the covered list, which catches people out because it is one of the most common reasons a flight runs late.
The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $2,000 rather than $500.
Baggage delay
The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $2,000 rather than $500.
It pays $100 a day for up to 5 days, not $500 at once.
Baggage has to be delayed more than 6 hours, measured from when you arrive rather than when the bag was checked.
You have to report it to the airline before leaving the airport, and keep their report. Without it the claim will not be considered.
