Chase United Explorer travel insurance: what it actually covers

Trip delay pays up to $500 per traveller once a flight is delayed more than 12 hours or forces an overnight stay. You have 60 days from the delay to open the claim.

Every figure below is read from Chase’s own Guide to Benefits, BGC11386_v2, read on 2026-07-26. Not from a comparison site.

The deadline is the part most people miss. Comparison sites publish the amounts and stop there. A benefit is worth nothing the day after its window closes, and nobody sends you a reminder.

What each one means in practice

Travel accident

The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $2,000,000 rather than $500,000.

Auto rental damage

Primary cover, which is rare. It pays before your own motor insurance rather than after, so you can decline the rental counter’s damage waiver without involving your insurer at all.

The entire cost has to go on this card. A partial payment does not qualify.

Lost or damaged baggage

The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $12,000 rather than $3,000.

You have to report it to the airline before leaving the airport, and keep their report. Without it the claim will not be considered.

Trip cancellation

The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $6,000 rather than $1,500.

Trips longer than 60 days are outside the cover entirely.

Trip interruption

The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $6,000 rather than $1,500.

Trips longer than 60 days are outside the cover entirely.

Trip delay

Twelve hours is the common threshold. A delay of six or eight hours, which is long enough to ruin a day and cost real money, does not reach it.

An overnight stay counts even when the delay is shorter than that.

Air traffic control delays are not on the covered list, which catches people out because it is one of the most common reasons a flight runs late.

The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $2,000 rather than $500.

Baggage delay

The limit is per person rather than per trip, so a family of four on one booking can reach $1,200 rather than $300.

It pays $100 a day for up to 3 days, not $300 at once.

Baggage has to be delayed more than 6 hours, measured from when you arrive rather than when the bag was checked.

You have to report it to the airline before leaving the airport, and keep their report. Without it the claim will not be considered.

What this card does not cover

Confirmed absent, not merely unlisted. This card carries no emergency medical and missed connection. That comes from the issuer’s own eligible-cards list rather than from an assumption, which matters because several well-known comparison sites publish figures for benefits the issuer does not list at all.

Filing a claim

Claims are handled by Virginia Surety Company, Inc. (Assurant), not by Chase directly. Open the claim at chasecardbenefits.com or call 1-800-350-2919.

Opening a claim and sending the documents are two different deadlines. Open it early, even while you are still collecting receipts.
